TORONTO, July 8, 2010 – Brooke King, a student at Domus Academy in Milan, placed second at the Triumph Inspiration National Award Competition this past June. Founded in 2008, the Italy-based competition awards the top candidate who best incorporates a given theme into the creation of a lingerie collection. Finalists showcase their collection on a runway before judges. This year’s theme was “Shape Sensation” and called upon entrants from all over the world to interpret of those words.
Hailing from Toronto, King began her education in fashion at Ryerson University, graduating with a Bachelor of Design in 2009. She then took her education abroad to Domus Academy and currently in the process of completing the Masters in Accessories Design program.
King created her lingerie collection, titled “Constriction Conviction” inspired by retro styles that reference a history of restrictions to the female body shape. Her lingerie designs featured high waistlines, demi-cup bras with mesh and leather straps, and a men’s shirt which the model removes while on the runway, a reference to the fashion industry’s changing standards. King views this project as a response to the prevalence of pin thin models in a fashion industry, which should embrace all shapes. Through her collection, King envisions a hopeful future for fashion.
